The start of a new month brings a new Safer Naper topic from the Naperville Police Department.
Back to school safety is the focus for August, to encourage smart behavior for both students and adults as the school year begins.
“I want to make sure that motorists of all ages know that they need to slow down during back to school time. So slow down, watch for the speed limit, watch for those school zones, watch for children that might not be paying attention and darting into the street,” explained Mary Browning, the community education specialist at the NPD.
Some top tips for the younger students going back to school are to learn their bus stop and route, having a walking buddy if they walk to school, and learning their home address and phone number in case of an emergency.
Similar safety tips go for the older students too. If your student is heading off to college for the first time, they should learn their routes around campus and utilize safe walk programs at night that most colleges offer.
