The League Of Women Voters in Naperville is on a mission to get millennials to the polls.
Members put together voter registration materials into “Birthday Boxes” that will go to government students at Metea Valley and Waubonsie Valley who are turning 18 this year.
“Well you know we’re all for civic engagement but the millennials, and traditionally young people, have not been that engaged in voting,” said Annette Smith, the voter service chair of LWV in Naperville. “They’re one of the lowest voting groups so we targeted them because we want to get them when they’re young to be interested in voting and it just takes a little knowledge and that will get them started on a path because once you vote once you’ll more than likely vote again so that’s been our big push.”
The organization has been giving out birthday boxes since the fall and they’ve reached about 100 students at each high school.
Smith says she hopes the League Of Women Voters can start making more birthday boxes for other schools in the Naperville area too.
