The Naperville City Council is proposing an additional $1.5 million in cuts for the city’s proposed 2018 budget.
Cuts include eliminating one emergency telecom supervisor position, reducing overtime pay, and requiring residents to pay for Christmas tree pickup.
Beginning in December 2018, residents will have to purchase stickers for $2.10 to have their trees picked up.
City staff says this change will save the Department of Public Works $42,000 a year.
“I don’t think anyone would have a problem putting a $2.10 sticker on a Christmas tree. I really don’t,” said Councilman Paul Hinterlong. “I mean that’s a better value than throwing a bag of leaves out in my opinion, to get rid of a whole tree.”
But council decided not to cut a proposed $160,000 from the Naperville Public Library. With these changes, city staff estimates the city’s portion of the property tax rate will not increase.
These proposed changes will go to city council for approval on December 5, and the tax levy will be considered on December 9.
The new budget goes into effect January 1.
