Last year a proposal of arming school staff was discussed at District 204, and it came up once again at the latest board meeting.
It was a majority no from District 204 board members as they agreed to oppose arming teachers.
At the latest school board meeting members discussed several proposals from the Illinois Association of School Boards, which included allowing school employees the option of carrying a legal, concealed firearm.
Why They Decided Against It
“Schools should provide a safe and secure environment for all students, and I don’t think bringing guns will give a safe and secure environment for all students,” said Board Member Natasha Grover.
What Did Community Members Have to Say?
Community members like those from the Moms Demand Action group also opposed the proposal, and one member voiced her concerns.
“Although I understand the frustrations and emotions that would lead someone to think arming teachers would be a good idea, but it is critical that we let data drive these decisions” said Leslie Duffing, a member from Moms Demand Action. “There is no evidence that arming teachers will make schools safer.”
What’s Next?
The school board agreed with Duffing’s sentiments and plan on having a formal vote on the proposal at the their next board meeting.
