Legendary journalist Dan Rather came to North Central College’s Pfeiffer Hall as part of his tour to discuss his book, “What Unites Us.”

The former CBS evening news anchor spoke in front of a packed house eager to hear his views on America.

“I’m very afraid these days of our political climate and where our country is heading, and I look to Dan Rather every morning when I read the news for his insight,” said Bethany Hollarbush, a longtime Rather fan.

He discussed his book with Becky Anderson and took questions from the audience ranging from who his favorite world leader is to how he thinks America will deal with the current political climate moving forward.

Rather also spoke about the state of journalism in America today, saying the press is under attack.

“A free and independent, fiercely independent press when necessary, is the red beating heart of freedom and democracy,” Rather said. “If you don’t have an independent press, we will wind up with some version of George Orwell’s world.”

Rather said he hopes the takeaway from his book is that one person can make a difference.

A portion of the proceeds from the event was donated to NCTV17.
