Today marks the beginning of Naperville’s first ever Earth Week.
Started by the Naperville Park District, the goal is to promote care and attention for the environment, beginning on national Earth Day and ending on Arbor Day.
Springing into the start of Earth Week was the opening of Naperville’s Pollination Station at the Municipal Center.
“Pollination Station means it’s a garden that attracts butterflies, bees, hummingbirds, native species in the area that really have struggled to find a habitat as more development has occurred,” said Amy Emery, the Strategic Projects Supervisor for the City of Naperville.” And so we’re hoping that residents and businesses will take inspiration from the garden and plant these same species in their garden.”
The Pollination Station was planted in partnership with the Naperville Garden Club and Conservation Foundation.
And digging up more for Earth Week was the opening day at the Ron Ory Community Garden Plots.
“It’s probably one of the top-notch community garden plots, at least in the Midwest, that I’ve seen,” said Ron Ory, a master naturalist that the garden is named after.
The community garden has over 500 plots open to buy or rent, and about 40 plots are still available.
“It’s just a really great chance to get out into the community and interact with other people. And this year definitely be part of Earth Week which is giving back to the Earth and being aware of sustainability issues and recycling and reusing,” said Angelique Harshman, the Garden Plots manager and Nature Center manager for the Naperville Park District.
