At their last meeting, District 204’s board approved a $40 fee increase for high school students for the 2017-2018 school year.
The fee increase is necessary to fund the roll out of Chromebooks at the high school level – one for every student.
1:1 implementation in high schools is just the next step in the district’s long-term plan to incorporate technology in the classroom.
“What I have been seeing in our classroom, the more and more that our teachers use this technology to help the individual student, I think it’s going to have a tremendous impact on our district,” said Mark Rising, a District 204 board member.
The district’s middle schools have had Chromebooks at the 1:1 level since the start of this school year, and elementary schools should see complete 1:1 implementation in 2018.
Also at the meeting, the district approved American Sign Language 2 as a new high school course.
This new class follows ASL 1 – allowing students who took the first course to continue their study of the language.
Coursework will include advanced vocab and grammar, and the study of deaf culture.
Over 200 students took American Sign Language last year.
