With the 2018 Oscar nominations out, we checked in with our friends at Ogden 6 for some insight into who could be heading home with Academy Awards this year.
Could a changing Hollywood bring changes to the 90th Academy Awards?
“I say look out for the women this year at the Oscars, and there sure are a lot of strong candidates,” said Mark Mazrimas, marketing manager for Classic Cinemas.
For just the fifth time ever, a woman is nominated for best director. Greta Gerwig got a nod for her directing debut with “Lady Bird,” but best director and best picture could come down to two men.
“I think it’s going to be ‘Three Billboards’ best picture [and] Guillermo del Torro best director for ‘The Shape of Water,’” said Mazrimas.
But he thinks there could be a surprise in the works.
“You heard it here first – ‘Get Out’ probably has a surprise chance of being the nominated best picture,” he said.
“The Shape of Water” swept the competition with the most nominations at 13, but when it comes to best actress Sally Hawkins might be left out to dry with the leading lady from “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri” taking the top spot.
“Frances McDormand says ‘In this case, this chick ain’t gonna lose.’ And that’s the line I’m going to use from Frances McDormand. She is not going to lose the Academy Award for best actress,” he said.
For best supporting actress Mazrimas likes Allison Janney for her acting in “I, Tonya,” saying her role was a cut above.
And while Christopher Plummer is the oldest actor to ever be nominated, Mazrimas is eyeing Sam Rockwell in “Three Billboards” for best supporting actor.
For best actor it’s an unrecognizable Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill who Mazrimas thinks will take the win.
“It doesn’t even look like Gary Oldman. It’s a role of a career,” he said.
Another Mazrimas favorite for those with a different taste in movies is best animated feature.
“Never bet against Disney/Pixar. I would pick ‘Coco,’” he explained.
And Classic Cinemas is giving you a chance to be a winner too. You can participate in their Predict the Oscars competition by filling out a ballot at the theater before March 3.
Jimmy Kimmel will host as the winners are revealed on ABC on March 4.
