In April of 2015, a crowd gathered for the Water Street District’s official groundbreaking. The $93-million development includes the boutique Hotel Indigo, restaurants, office and retail space.
But the project wasn’t always a huge hit with citizens, facing much backlash while awaiting approval from city council. In particular, the hotel was thought to be too big and not fitting for the Riverwalk.
After several years of the council and residents working together, the city gave the green light for final plans in February 2015 and within two months crews got to work. Just over two years later, the community had a ribbon cutting celebrating the new Water Street District. So far the district includes the 158-room hotel, elements banquet hall, and several restaurants and retailers.
