At a recent Planning and Zoning meeting, the commission unanimously approved a conditional use of the property on the southwest corner of Diehl Road and Raymond Drive for a 174-unit for those 55 and older.
And that population is growing, with many looking to downsize as their kids move out and only finding there aren’t many options in Naperville available.
“It is going to service a significant growing portion of our population in Naperville for those who want to stay here. We don’t necessarily want to send them someplace else so we need to provide those housing options,” said Carrie Hansen, a planning and zoning commissioner.
This particular development is targeted for active and independent seniors – for those who need less space but don’t need assistance.
“The reality is the Naperville is projected to have 40,000 people over the age of 55 and not all of them fall into a single model of homes for the elderly,” said Jim Hill, a member of Naperville’s senior task force.
The commission also approved variances for an increased maximum building height, and for less parking, as the resident age restriction tends to reduce the amount of cars on the property.
The plan now heads to city council, though mayor Steve Chirico will recuse himself from the discussions as he is connected to the developers, AG Investors.
