With a round of applause greeting the ribbon cutting, Steinway & Sons Piano Warehouse at 1600 Shore Road was open for business.
The new location is not a traditional retail store. Instead, it’s a performance space, featuring the 164-year-old piano maker’s nine-foot long concert grand piano, the same that you would see onstage at professional performance halls.
The kicker? Steinway is offering this space for local music teachers to host their student piano recitals for free.
“We have a renewed interest, a renewed passion for music educators,” said Diane Duncan, General Manager of Steinway & Sons Chicago. “Music educators are those individuals that are dedicated and keep the music going in the lives of young children.”
In addition to the performance space, the location has a small collection of new pianos on display, and a stock of over 40 used pianos in the warehouse.
“We want to find a home for each of those pianos and this is a perfect space,” said Duncan. “Come for an event, a concert, and browse our pianos in the back.”
The new location offers something noteworthy to local piano students and teachers.
